16-18th centuries, the territory of the Dnipropetrovs'k oblast was included into the lands of the Zaporizhian Cossack Army. Five out of eight Zaporizhian Siches were located in the oblast's territory. That's why during the eight months in 1918 under the decree of Hetman Pavlo Skoropads'kyi Dnipropetrovs'k was called Sicheslav (The Glory of Sich). In 1926 Dnipropetrovs'k got its current name, which consists of two words: "Dnipro" (Dnipro River) and "Petrovs'k" (named after Petrovskiy). Grigoriy Petrovskiy (1878-1958) was the first Parliament (Soviet) leader of the new communist Ukrainian republic.

First, the city of Yekaterinoslav was founded not in the current location, but at the confluence of the River Samara with the River Kil'chen' at Loshakivka, north of the Dnipro, but because of the spring waters it was moved to its current site in 1783.

City's rapid growth began in the end of the 19th century, when the railway was built (in 1884) and Kryvyi Rih iron ores were discovered by Alexandr Pol' in 1866.

In 1897 Yekaterinoslav has got electric trams (with the help of Belgian entrepreneurs). The construction of the biggest metallurgical factories started during those years as well.

But the World War I and then the Revolution and a Civil War resulted in a paralysis of industrial, cultural and economical development of the city.

After the Russian February revolution in 1917 Yekaterinoslav became a city within autonomy of Ukrainian People's Republic under Tsentralna Rada government.

During the World War II the city was occupied by Nazis in August 25, 1941 and freed by Ukrainian army in October 25, 1943.

Dnipropetrovsk was an important center of Jewish life. The history of the local Jewish community starts practically from the moment of the city foundation in 1776 with a decree of the Empress Yekaterina II "On granting citizenship to Jews in Yekaterinoslav region and Tavrichesky province". But the development of Jewish life was stopped by the Revolution and Civil War, then by anti-Jewish and anti-religious policy of the Soviet authorities and later by the horrors of the Holocaust.

First attempts to revive Jewish life in the city were undertaken in the late 1980s due to political changes in the Soviet Union. However real beginning of Jewish revival in Dnipropetrovsk began in 1990.
