Soviet murals and mosaics.

Mosaic is the art of decoration with small pieces of colored glass, stone or other material. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration or of cultural and spiritual significance.
Mosaics has been quite popular in the Eastern Orthodox countries, inherited as part of the Byzantine tradition. One of the most famous Kyiv Cathedrals, Saint Sophia, has been built during the times of Yaroslav, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus' mainly by Byzantine master craftsmen, sent by Constantine Monomachos. Naturally the more important surfaces in the interior of the Cathedral were decorated with golden mosaics.
Prince Sviatopolk II built St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in Kiev in 1108, mosaics of which are undoubtedly works of Byzantine artists. Although the church was destroyed by Soviet authorities, majority of the panels were preserved.

Mosaics was very popular in the former USSR, especially during 70s and 80s. There are many examples of Soviet murals and mosaics left on the buildings and apartments of Ukraine.

Athletes, farmers, workers and cosmonauts are the main heroes in the Soviet murals and mosaics. Many of these symbols have got ideological meanings and depicting Soviet life, vitality, youth and culture. But only the wall-art approved by the Communist party could appear. Men were always shown tall and strong. These images of the past give more than just a glimpse back into the life of the Soviet Union.

Sadly lots of them are pretty much neglected these days, though they are a great display of the history.
